Garissa Jua Kali Association Chairperson Osman Barkhadle has commended President William Ruto for his continued support for the Jua Kali sector, saying the government’s interventions are creating new opportunities for artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs in Northern Kenya.

Barkhadle said investments in the informal sector, including improved access to markets, skills development and empowerment programmes, have strengthened the livelihoods of thousands of Jua Kali operators across the region.

He also praised the President for expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, saying they are equipping residents with practical skills and enhancing the country’s skilled workforce.

Barkhadle called for stronger partnerships between the national and county governments to further support artisans through infrastructure, financing, training and market access.

He made the remarks while serving as a panelist during the 4th Devolution Sensitisation Week (DSW 2026) in Garissa, where leaders emphasized inclusive governance, citizen participation and the role of devolution in expanding opportunities for all Kenyans, particularly women, youth and persons with disabilities.

Held under the theme, “Devolution for Better Health, Empowered Communities,” the symposium provided residents with an opportunity to engage leaders, seek clarification on devolution and celebrate the milestones achieved by county governments.

The conference aimed to bring devolution closer to the people through accessible services, citizen engagement and greater accountability. The week-long event brought together the two levels of government, Parliament, development partners and citizens in a shared commitment to strengthen devolution and improve service delivery.
