Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen invoked provisions of the National Police Service Act to authorize intensified security operations in the affected areas on Thursday.

The government has declared parts of Laikipia, Meru and Isiolo counties as security-disturbed and dangerous to pave the way for a major security operation targeting banditry and illegal firearms.

About 400 additional police officers have also been deployed to reinforce teams already on the ground, a move to curb rising incidents of criminal activity in the three counties.

The operation will include a coordinated crackdown aimed at flushing out perpetrators of recent attacks and conducting a mop-up of illegal firearms believed to be fueling insecurity in the region.

“We have declared parts of Laikipia, Meru, and Isiolo counties as security-disturbed and dangerous to facilitate a major security operation to weed out perpetrators of recent incidents of criminal activities in the areas,” the Interior Ministry said.

CS Murkomen that the government will intensify efforts until banditry is completely eradicated and criminal networks dismantled.

The notice states that the declaration took effect on March 26, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. and will remain in force for 30 days, with the possibility of extension depending on the security situation.

The Interior Ministry urged residents to cooperate with security agencies during the operation and report suspicious activities to help restore peace in the affected areas.
