However, many young people continue to face challenges that limit their opportunities and prospects more than other kenyans.

10 challenges facing youth in Garissa

Collaboration between government, the private sector, community leaders, and the youth themselves is key to addressing these issues.

1. Unemployment

Joblessness remains one of the biggest concerns among young people in Garissa. Many graduates and school leavers struggle to find meaningful employment.

Possible solution: Invest in entrepreneurship, vocational training, and support for small businesses to create more jobs.

2. Limited access to capital

Many young entrepreneurs have viable business ideas but lack the financing needed to start or expand their ventures.

Possible solution: Increase access to youth enterprise funds, microfinance facilities, and business mentorship programs.

3. Skills mismatch

Some employers report difficulties finding workers with the skills required in today’s job market.

Possible solution: Strengthen technical and vocational education while aligning training programs with market demands.

4. Drug and substance abuse

The growing use of drugs and other substances among some youths threatens their health, productivity, and future prospects.

Possible solution: Expand awareness campaigns, counseling services, rehabilitation programs, and recreational activities.

5. Climate change impacts

Frequent droughts and unpredictable weather patterns affect livelihoods, especially for youth involved in livestock keeping and agriculture.

Possible solution: Promote climate-smart agriculture, water conservation, and alternative income-generating activities.

6. Limited sports and recreation facilities

Many young people lack access to quality sporting grounds, youth centres, and recreational spaces.

Possible solution: Invest in sports infrastructure and community programs that nurture talent and keep youth engaged.

7. Inadequate digital opportunities

Although technology is transforming economies, some youths still face barriers to internet access, digital skills, and technology resources.

Possible solution: Expand digital literacy programs and establish innovation hubs equipped with internet and training facilities.

8. Early marriages and school dropouts

Some young people, particularly girls, face challenges completing their education due to early marriage and other social factors.

Possible solution: Strengthen community sensitization efforts and support initiatives that keep children in school.

9. Insecurity and radicalization risks

Limited economic opportunities can make some youths vulnerable to criminal activities or extremist recruitment.

Possible solution: Create employment opportunities, strengthen community policing, and promote civic engagement programs.

Many young people feel excluded from decision-making processes despite being the majority of the population.

Possible solution: Encourage youth representation in public institutions, community forums, and political leadership structures.

Despite these challenges, the youth, our human capital remain one of the county’s greatest assets. Targeted investments in education, entrepreneurship, technology, sports, and leadership development, young people can become a powerful force for economic growth, innovation, and community development.
