Industry Mentorship Boosts Healthcare Tech Skills for Kenyan Graduates

New programme links university students directly with employers to close skills gap and improve job readiness

A new mentorship programme is giving university students practical exposure to healthcare technology as Kenya pushes to make its graduates more employable.

The initiative brings together students, universities and industry players to bridge the persistent gap between classroom learning and workplace demands.

Students attended interactive sessions focused on real-world healthcare tech applications, gaining hands-on skills and direct industry connections.

Isaiah Mosiori, CEO of Smart Applications, said the programme is designed to produce job-ready graduates.

“This mentorship programme is about equipping our graduates with real-world healthcare technology skills. Through strong industry partnerships, we’re closing the gap between what universities teach and what employers need. Our goal is better employability for our young people,” Mosiori said.

Participating student Sandra Masaku said the experience has transformed her outlook.

“As a student, this programme has opened my eyes to practical applications in healthcare tech. I feel more confident about entering the job market after gaining these hands-on skills and industry connections,” she said.

Dr Agnes Mindila, Director of the School of Computing and IT at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), welcomed the collaboration.

“We are committed to supporting students through mentorship. These partnerships with industry leaders will help narrow the skills gap and create opportunities for graduates in Kenya’s growing healthcare technology sector,” Dr Mindila stated.

The programme is seen as a promising step in tackling youth unemployment by aligning education with market needs. Organisers say more such targeted skills initiatives will be rolled out in the coming months.
