10 Reasons Why the Galmagalla Health Centre Upgrade is a Game Changer for Maternal Health

Share:

The Cabinet has selected Galmagalla Health Centre in Fafi Sub-County for a major upgrade under the Government’s Ksh4.5 billion Mother and Child Lifeline Initiative.

The project is a partnership between the Government of Kenya and the Amsons Group that will establish 10 specialised Level 4 and Level 5 mother and child hospitals across 10 counties.

Galmagalla Health Centre, located in Dekaharia Ward, Fafi Sub-County, is currently classified as a Level 3 comprehensive healthcare facility and is regulated by the Ministry of Health and the Garissa County Department of Health.

Following the Cabinet’s proclamation on Tuesday, the facility will be upgraded to a Level 4 hospital, enabling it to provide expanded maternity, newborn, paediatric, and other specialised healthcare services.

The health centre currently offers essential primary healthcare services, including focused antenatal care, Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC), child immunisation, growth monitoring, Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM), and multiple micronutrient supplementation services.

The upgrade will also improve access to quality healthcare for residents of Fafi Sub-County and neighbouring areas.

The hospital, the first level 4 Hospital in the Sub-County, strives to offer an expanded range of services, including inpatient care, comprehensive maternity services, comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care, surgical procedures, diagnostic and laboratory services, and enhanced child healthcare.

The upgraded facility will also have increased bed capacity, improved medical equipment, and a larger healthcare workforce, reducing the need for referrals to distant facilities such as Garissa County Referral Hospital.

The investment is intended to strengthen the region’s health system, improve maternal and newborn health outcomes, and bring essential specialised healthcare services closer to underserved communities.

The initiative, led by President William Ruto, targets to transform the selected health centres into higher-level referral hospitals dedicated to maternal and child healthcare.

The Galmagalla Level 4 Hospital after the upgrading, will provide specialised maternity, newborn, and paediatric services to residents of Fafi Sub-County and neighbouring communities in Garissa County.

The selected facilities are expected to improve maternal and newborn healthcare by strengthening health infrastructure, equipping hospitals with modern medical technology, and enhancing the capacity of healthcare workers.

The programme is also designed to reduce maternal and infant mortality while bringing quality specialised healthcare closer to underserved communities.

The Ksh4.5 billion investment for the facility and ten others, enhances access to quality healthcare and life-saving maternal and child health services.
